Welcome to Piedmont Language School

Piedmont Language School is a non-profit organization founded more than 40 years ago by Piedmont parents. We offer classes in Spanish and Mandarin to children as young as pre-school to 6th grade. We have about 300 students per year learning languages and discovering cultures through our programs. Our classes are offered before and after-school, generally on-site at all Piedmont elementary schools and Piedmont Middle School locations. We are committed to bringing language to as many children as possible and offer scholarships for those in need.

In addition to our language programs, we champion language and culture in the community and we support the school district by raising funds to advocate best practices and innovative thinking in the classroom. This is similar to the model employed by the art & music support organizations in our community. We have provided research for the PMS, textbooks and materials to PHS and continue to offer funding for programs to supplement the curriculum with funding a field trip or special programs to promote all different cultures.

Our programs:

Viva El EspanolOur Spanish program is provided by our partner, Viva el Español, a non-profit Spanish and Language Cultural center based in Lafayette. All our teachers are native Spanish speakers with extensive experience teaching kids. We have a terrific curriculum in place. We sing, dance, paint, read stories, and play games with kids, all in Spanish.

Our Mandarin program offers five levels with simplified curriculum and educational materials to enhance the students’ listening, speaking and reading skills. We focus on communication and task/performance based learning so students can make a good use of practical vocabulary and sentences in their daily life.

Our Board:

Our organization was founded by a group of Piedmont parents who wanted to supplement their children’s education by offering language classes. Today, we continue to be a volunteer, parent-run board who believe that children should have the chance to learn foreign languages during the elementary school years, when language learning comes most naturally to them. Piedmont Language School is committed to preparing and inspiring children for continued study, work and citizenship in our global community. We will support, advocate and create opportunities for foreign language learning and cultural exposure for all children in Piedmont schools.
